Cornflower: A Botanical of Summer

Cornflower: A Botanical of Summer

Few flowers capture the essence of summer quite like cornflower.

With its vivid blue petals and delicate appearance, cornflower has long brought colour to fields, meadows and field margins across Europe. Once a familiar sight amongst cereal crops, it remains one of the season's most recognisable wildflowers and has been appreciated for centuries for its gentle, soothing qualities.

Today, cornflower continues to be valued in botanical skincare, where it is often used in formulations designed to comfort and refresh the skin.

At Remy Green, cornflower is the botanical at the heart of our new collection.

Its bright blue flowers immediately evoke the landscapes and seasons that inspire so much of our work. It is a plant that speaks of midsummer, abundance and the quiet beauty found in ordinary places.

Although cornflower has historically grown throughout parts of Britain and Wales, naturally occurring populations are far less common today. Using native wild-harvested cornflower at scale would neither be practical nor responsible. Instead, we source a cornflower extract through a French supplier specialising in natural and organic raw material, allowing us to work with this beautiful botanical while respecting the landscapes where it naturally occurs.

For us, cornflower is a reminder to find beauty in the everyday and remain connected to the natural world that continues to inspire everything we create.

Founder Notes

I've always loved cornflower.

Perhaps it's the colour, that impossible shade of blue-violet that seems to hold something of the summer sky within it. Or perhaps it's the way it appears unexpectedly amongst grasses and wildflowers, bringing brightness to the landscape and delight to passers by (such as myself).

When developing our new collection, I wanted to work with a botanical that felt connected to place and season. Cornflower immediately came to mind.

Although the extract we use isn't sourced from wild Welsh cornflowers, the flower still carries the same meaning for me. It reminds me of summer along the coastal path, expansive horizons and hedgerows awash with cow parsley.

In many ways, that is what Remy Green is about: finding beauty in ordinary moments and cultivating a connection to the inner and outer landscapes, seasons and stories that shape our lives.
